How To: Brown Paper Bag Projects

Part of the reason why I love to do different craft projects and design is because of my mother. I grew up watching her make bows, create purses, sew Halloween costumes, and decorate the house all while holding down a full time job. She is super talented, and throughout this blog, I’ll be sharing some of the projects she is completing down in my home state of Louisiana. We’ll call her Budget Brunette!
Here we are on my wedding day last January:
Sassy, right? Well, this weekend my mom Budget Brunette decided to complete a super easy and inexpensive brown paper bag project.
This what you’ll need:
·         A canvas, wall, piece of furniture, etc. to love on
·         Brown paper  (She used a roll of mailing paper from Office Depot, but you can use paper bags.)
·         Elmers Glue
·         Paintbrush
·         Elegant Finish Metallic Glaze (in whatever finish you like)

First, dilute Elmers glue with water. You want it pretty watery so that the paper gets wet. Use a paintbrush to put the glue on paper.

Then starts the fun and creative part. Place the paper on the surface of your table or wall and continue to layer the paper one on top of the other. Keep going until you have your entire table/wall /etc. covered, carefully wrapping it around corners. Mom explained that she started off with smaller pieces but decided to go bigger and liked the effect just as much (plus using bigger pieces cuts down on the project time).

Let the project dry overnight. Then, brush the glaze over the entire project. Mom chose a gold metallic and used a little copper glaze as well in various places to give it a snazzy, two-toned effect. Let this dry and finish it off with a coat of poly for a little extra gleam and protection.

Here is the finished project:

And here is it’s close up so you can really see the textured effect:

So, what do you guys think? This project was very inexpensive. Mom snagged the table for 20 beans at a local thrift store and all her supplies came in at around $15. Can’t beat it with a stick, right? (Although we hope she doesn’t beat her new, shiny table with a stick)!

Spill the beans: Did mom Budget Brunette do a good job? Anyone else have experience with brown paper bag projects? I’ve seen pictures in magazines where people cover their entire floor like this! Gotta love a project that’s quick, easy, and budget friendly.
